Jan 25, 2009 - ING Miami Marathon,
Jynocel Basweti 2nd 2:18:14 Marathon
Edward Tabut 3rd 2:18:30 Marathon
Jynocel Basweti ran a courageous race. Basweti pushed the pace from the start and managed to open a 20 second lead by mile 19. Unfortunately the camera vehicle which he was following the entire race was mistakenly directed off the course. He followed the truck and was 100 meters down the wrong road before he realized the situation and scambled back. By then the 2nd and 3rd place athletes were already 10-15 seconds ahead. Basweti pushed hardto get back into the group and actually surged ahead at mile 24! The added energy and mental anguish of the situation though had taken out his finishing strength. The 2nd place guy passed him at mile 25 and Basweti crossed in 2nd at 2:18:14. Fortunately, after we had much discussion with the race organizer and reviewing the circumstances, the organizer decided to award him with a bonus to equal the prize ofthe first place finisher. This was a wonderful gesture on the part of the organizer to aknowledge the efforts and innocent error on the course. Congratulations on a super effort Basweti!
